IRELAND: Ireland's wind energy sector will deliver consumer savings of €100 million by 2020 through reduced electricity prices, according to a report commissioned by the Irish Wind Energy Association.

‘The impact of wind on pricing within the Single Electricity Market’ found that delivering 45% of energy from wind by 2020 would achieve an 11.5% reduction in wholesale electricity prices.

The report, compiled by analytical consultancy Redpoint Energy Limited, showed that savings for consumers as a result of wind generation are set to reach €36.6 million in 2011.

Wind energy currently accounts for approximately 12% of Ireland’s electricity needs.

According to the latest Windpower Monthly Windicator, Ireland has the 10th highest installed capacity in Europe, with 1,459MW.
