The Spanish manufacturer will supply 9 G52 850KW turbines for the Mount Stuart wind farm in Otago, part of New Zealand’s South Island. The contract is with Pioneer Generation.
Gamesa also plans to set up a subsidiary in the region, with a technology centre located in Singapore. The facility will also offer operation and maintenance services.
The move is also part of Gamesa’s plan to gain a foothold in new markets. Ramón Terrones, regional director – Asia Pacific & Oceania, said: "Gamesa's strategy in the Asia-Pacific region includes establishing a firm presence in the medium-long term."
Last year, Gamesa announced it was planning to both expand into new markets and to double its operations and maintenance contract capacity to 24GW by 2013.
The company also said that based on its 2009 figures, it planned to increase sales in the US, China, India and Latin America by 15%, 20%, 166% and 50% respectively.
