The development, located 25km off the south east coast of England, is a joint project with RWE npower renewables, the UK subsidiary of RWE Innogy, and SSE.
Greater Gabbard consists of 140 Siemens 3.6MW turbines. The first two turbines have now started generating electricity.
All the foundations have been installed and over 70 turbines are now in place. The project is scheduled for completion in 2012.
Greater Gabbard was the third wind farm to secure approval under 'Round 2', the government’s 7.2GW second round of offshore consenting. It is also the first wind farm to be built outside the UK’s territorial waters.
RWE and SSE were given approval in May to develop the 504MW Galloper wind farm adjacent to Greater Gabbard.
