The projects - at Lamberts Bay, Klawer, the Richtersveld, Witberg and the Roggerveld - are all located in the Western Cape and Northern Cape regions of the country.
The sites were identified by Killian Hagemann, a private wind power consultant, who concludes that wind has the potential to provide 35% of electricity in the country.
"The supply (of wind) is not a limiting factor," he says. "There is a percentage you can rely on, whatever the weather."
