Wind Wire: Blades firm lays off 200 staff

US: Arizona-based TPI Composites is temporarily laying off more than 200 employees at its factory in Newton, Iowa, where it has made blades for GE turbines since 2008.

The company, which expects to begin rehiring at the Newton plant before the end of the year, is currently planning a second US factory to produce blades for an unnamed turbine manufacturer - with Sioux City, Iowa, among the likely locations. TPI operates a blade factory in China for GE turbines, along with a facility in Mexico that has produced blades for Mitsubishi machines since 2002.
