Horizon looks to expand Illinois wind farm to 600MW

US: Horizon Wind Energy has filed applications for an additional 300.6MW at its Top Crop facility in north-central Illinois, according to local media.

The two phases will add to 102MW completed last year and 198MW expected online in October, the newspapers said. Horizon, the US development arm of EDP Renewables, was unable to comment.

The papers said that in total, the four project phases will have turbines in Grundy, LaSalle and Livingston counties.

Top Crop's first phase has 68 GE turbines of 1.5MW each.

Horizon has more megawatts installed in Illinois than any other developer, with 598.5MW, or 32% of the state's 1.8GW capacity. Iberdrola comes second with 300MW, or 16%.

Just over a quarter of Horizon's installed US capacity is in Illinois - more than in any other state.

Horizon's other Illinois installations are the 100.5MW Rail Splitter, which also uses 1.5MW GE machines, and the multi-phase, 396MW Twin Groves project in McLean County. That project uses Vestas 1.65MW turbines.
