First three Peruvian wind projects selected

PERU: The Peruvian government has selected three wind power projects totalling 142MW, following the country's first renewable energy auction in February.

The Peruvian-Spanish company Energia Eolica won two contracts: 80MW at Cupisnique and 30MW at Talara.

The third went to Cobra Peru and Peru Energia Renovable for a 32MW facility at Marcona. All three must be operational by 2013, with the output being sold under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

While Peru has just 1MW of wind power turning today, it aims to generate 5% of its electricity from renewables, excluding hydropower, by 2014. The country has an estimated wind power potential of 22GW.
